The future role of Brussels

20 januari 2010
Sven Gatz

Het Ludwig von Mises Institute Europe (zie website) organiseert op dinsdag 26 januari in het Europees Parlement een lunchdebat over de toekomstige rol van Brussel. Sven Gatz is één van de gastsprekers.

The conference aims to investigate important questions concerning the role of Brussels in the future. Among the key issues to be addressed is whether the Brussels Region can function as an interface between the local population and the officials of the EU Institutions. In this sense, the major bottle necks will be ascertained, in an attempt to offer possible explanations for the obstacles to the integration of the local and the European level.

The prospects for Brussels becoming one day “the capital of Europe” will also be discussed, with particular attention being paid to the link between the role and moves toward further European integration. The changes undergone over the past fifty years which have made Brussels a microcosm of Europe will be discussed, and the possible effects of a "two-speed Europe" on the international role of the city will be singled out. Also the possibility of implanting a new "European district" should be discussed.
